Weekend Planner: Remembering 9/11, Fall Festival, DeKoven Disturbance, Bird Hiking, Apple Festival

Commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11, meet up with old friends at the fall festival, enjoy a comedy show with a twist, search for skimmers and taste the ripest apples.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the weekend. Patch is coming to the rescue.

We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time. Check our picks for the activities to hit this weekend.


Where/When: Alameda County Fairgrounds, 4501 Pleasanton Ave., Pleasanton; Sunday, Sept. 11, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Why Go: Impact of America is hosting a free daytime event with food, music, carnival rides, games and other attractions. An evening event, 7 to 9 p.m. at the amphitheater, stars American Idol contestant Jason Castro and surprise guests.
Cost: Daytime admission is free. Concert tickets start at $10. Purchase tickets at www.ImpactforAmerica.com


Where/When: Castro Valley Boulevard and Santa Maria Avenue, Castro Valley; Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 10-11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Why Go: The annual fall festival is back, bringing you three stages for live entertainment, food, activities for kids, a car show and much more. Come early, as parking fills up on nearby streets.
Cost: Free admission


Where/When: Bunjo’s Comedy Louge, 6513 Regional St., Dublin; Friday, Sept 9, from 7:30am to 9 p.m.
Why Go: Add six to eight comedians with a side of John DeKoven, the host, disturbing their sets with his sound effects board and microphone — and you get a night of memories you’ll never forget. 
Cost: $10


Where/When: Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center, 4901 Breakwater Ave., Hayward; Saturday, Sept. 10, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Why Go: Bring your hiking sticks and journey in search of skimmers in their natural habitat.
Cost: Free


Where/When: Garin Regional Park, 1320 Garin Ave., Hayward; Saturday, Sept. 10, from noon to 4 p.m.
Why Go: You know what they say: an apple a day keeps the doctor away! Visit Garin’s antique apple orchards to celebrate the history of farming through music, crafts and games. And, of course, taste the ripest and richest apples.
Cost: Free admission. $5 parking fee
