Week in Review—Big Dresses, Big Paychecks, Big Dreams

The biggest stories from the last week of April.

It was a big week at San Lorenzo Patch—from big dresses at prom to big salaries at the school district (the biggest in the region), big dreams in Fruitvale to big green volunteers in the Village.

Thursday: Five artists competing to adorn the Ashland Youth Center's interior courtyard Applause was an early favorite, but you have until May 17 to disagree!

Also on Thursday, a Grant Elementary School 1st grader whose environmental stewardship inspired his fellow students to spiff up their school. 

Friday: We brought you an , a local student whose family was ripped apart by a new federal immigration program called Secure Communities. We caught up with her at a rally with Congressman Luis Gutierrez, where she joined hundreds of activists from around the Bay to demand an end to the policy and a new way forward for immigrants like her.  

Also on Friday BART approved a study that , making the rail service about as convenient as Taco Bell.
