Retired CV Teachers Asked for Thousands of Dollars

Retirees are asked to make up for district's payment mistake.

Retired Castro Valley teachers were told they owed as much as $8,000 that the district paid them by mistake, according to a story in the San Jose Mercury News.

According to the report, district officials mistakenly paid retired teachers, including those from Castro Valley High and elsewhere, $226 per month to support Medicare. The perk was eliminated from the teachers' contract in 1997, but never taken off the accounting rolls, according to the story

As a result, the district is asking retired teachers to repay up to three years of back payments, according to the story. About 85 retirees are affected.

What do you think? Should teachers have to make up for the district's mistake?
