Land a Job, Lower Your Risk of Heart Disease and 'Space Mix' at a Science Center

We chose five things you might consider trying out this week.

We regularly scrape and scour to find cool things around town that you can actively participate in, then choose our five favorites to present to you on Mondays. If you've got suggestions for future Five Things offerings, please post them in the comment section below.

In this week's list, you'll find ways to be stronger, smarter, and even do better in job interviews.

  1. Write to Read: Improve your reading, writing and comprehension while meeting new friends at the , 3600 Norbridge Ave., on Tuesday, March 22, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Write to Read reading club practices English pronunciation and vocabulary to help improve English skills for both native speakers and second language learners. Pre registration is required but the classes, which run through May 17, are free.
  2. Land a Job: Learn how to be successful on a job interview by stopping by the , 3600 Norbridge Ave., and learning how to empower yourself before your next interview so that you land that job. On Tuesday, March 22, from 6:45 p.m. to 8 p.m., career coach Jane Malmgren will cover the five most important things you should consider for an interview.
  3. Lower Your Risk: Learn how to lower your risk for heart disease at , 20103 Lake Chabot Rd., on Thursday, March 24. From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., internal medicine specialist Ling Xu, M.D., will be teaching a free class about Castro Valley’s No. 1 health issue. Show up early for free blood pressure and cholesterol screening from 6 to 6:30 p.m.
  4. Mingle with Science: Head to Oakland on Friday, March 25 to check out the “Space Mix” at Chabot Space & Science Center, 10000 Skyline Blvd. The event includes cosmic views of the night sky, beverages and hors d'oeuvres. Don’t forget to take advantage of full access to Chabot's hands-on exhibits while you’re there. Price is $25 per person. Reservations required; call 510-336-7311.
  5. Help a Scout: Give blood this Saturday, March 26, at the Faith Lutheran Church, 20800 Redwood Rd. , Boy Scout Troop 722 and Girl Scout Cadette Troop 30711 will sponsor the blood drive. Blood stations located in Jensen Hall from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m..
