How to Prepare for This Weekend's Storms

The Alameda County Public Works Agency has tips for residents preparing for this weekend's weather.

Break out those rubber boots!

The National Weather Service is predicting heavy rains Friday and all weekend long in San Lorenzo and across the Bay Area.

With high winds and several inches of precipitation expected, residents are being warned to prepare for possible power outages and urban flooding.

"By early morning the first in a series of storms will move onshore spreading rain and gusty winds south across the region," the NWS wrote in an advisory. "More storms are poised to move onshore over the weekend into the middle of next week, setting the stage for a potentially very wet and windy period."

In preparation for the weekend's storms, the Alameda County Public Works Agency has set up sand bag distribution for local residents concerned about potential flooding.

Bags can be picked up at the Agency's Maintenance & Operations Department at 951 Turner Court, Hayward, or at local fire stations, the agency said. But be prepared to show ID. Residents will be allotted a maximum of 10 bags each.

Here's some more advice for inclement weather from the Agency:

  • Never try to drive through standing water. If you drive through hilly roads during a storm, watch for road hazards (i.e. washed out pavement, trees, power lines, mud, etc.) Check roof drains and downspouts to make sure they are clear of debris. Keep children away from creeks and large drains that can be deadly during storms. Keep leaves and yard trimmings out of storm drains and gutters. Don't forget your pets. Turn off automatic sprinklers. Don't store hazardous materials in areas that may be subject to flooding. Store emergency supplies (first aid kit, essential medicines, cash, food, non-electric can opener, portable radio, flashlights, and spare batteries) in air-tight bags and in handy locations. Keep your car fueled: if electric power is cut off, filling stations may not be able to operate.
