UPDATED: Foothill Boulevard Reopens After Gas Leak Repair

A Taco Bell in Hayward was evacuated and firefighters laid fire lines as a precaution in case the gas ignited, authorities said.

Bay City News — A gas leak near a Taco Bell in Hayward closed Foothill Boulevard near interstate highways 580 and 238 for about two hours this morning, a Hayward fire captain said.

The road reopened around 1 p.m.

Drivers who would normally access those highways from Foothill Boulevard were asked to take alternate routes while crews worked to stop the flow of gas through a damaged line.

While the section of northbound Foothill Boulevard between City Center Drive and Grove Way was closed, drivers were asked to take Mission Boulevard to use either Grove Way or Mattox Road to access the freeway on-ramp.

Those traveling from Castro Valley were advised to take Grove Way or Castro Valley Boulevard.

A ruptured 2-inch plastic pipe was reported at 10:30 a.m. by a utility crew working just south of Foothill Boulevard and Grove Way, said Hayward fire Capt. Thor Poulsen.

The Taco Bell was evacuated while two engines, a fire truck and a battalion chief laid fire lines as a precaution in case the gas ignited, Poulsen said.

PG&E arrived at about 11:15 a.m. to begin repairs by pinching the line, which serves businesses on the northern side of Foothill Boulevard, Poulsen said.

There was no estimate on how long it would take to complete the
repairs, a PG&E spokeswoman said.
