Frugal Family: Let's Go, Kids! It's Free (or Cheap)

Patch scoured local resources to come up with inexpensive kid-friendly activities in and around San Lorenzo.

This week, Patch searched for kid-friendly activities you can do on a budget. Your children will love them, and you wallet will too.

1. 

Deal: Have a family dinner at Carrows. Wednesdays and Thursdays after 4 p.m., all kids' meals are free.

The Fine Print: Each kid’s meal much be accompanied by the purchase of an adult entrée.

Extra, Extra: Check out Carrows’ St. Paddy’s Day favorites between March 14 and 20, from 11 a.m. until they sell out.

Deal: Catch story time at the on Mondays from 7 to 7:30 p.m. The program includes specially selected stories and songs for preschoolers.

The Fine Print: Weekly in the children’s area.

Extra, Extra: Kids can wear pajamas to story time.

3. MANOR BOWL

Deal: Go bowling during “Wacky Weekdays” at Manor Bowl and save big. Between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., you can get two games of bowling, shoe rental and a snack for $5 per person.

The Fine Print: Offer is not valid on weekends.

Extra, Extra: On Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to midnight, games are $2 each per person and shoe rental is $3. There is at least one bowling special every day of the week.

4. JUSTICE

Deal: Spend a mommy-and-me day shopping at Justice. Pick up tank tops for $8.90 each when you buy two or more, or load up on socks while they are buy two pairs, get one free.

The Fine Print: No coupon required. All items are on sale.

Extra, Extra: Pick up graphic tees and leggings while you’re there. $14.90 each when you buy two or more.

Good through: While sale lasts.

5. OAKLAND ZOO

Deal: Spend a day at the Oakland Zoo. Children’s admission, for ages 2 to 14, is $8.50, and kids younger than 2 are free. Want to save some extra dough? Make a reservation for a group of more than 12 and tickets drop to $6. Adult tickets, ages 15 to 64, are $12.50 for regular admission and $8 with the group reservation discount.

The Fine Print: Must make a group reservation more than two weeks in advance to receive the full discount. $7 parking fee per vehicle.

Extra, Extra: Make it a day for the whole family by inviting the grandparents. Tickets for seniors, age 65 to 79, are the same as kids' prices and seniors ages 80 and up are free. Ask about their military discounts as well.
