CV Weekend Planner: Rags to Riches, Baseball Game, Jewelry Making, Live Blues Music, Bird Expo

Watch Cinderella hit the stage, attend an Oakland A’s game and fund-raise, create your own jewelry, listen to a Grammy Award winning blues artist, and surround yourself with birds.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the weekend. Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time. Check our picks for the activities to hit this weekend.


Where/When: Castro Valley Center for the Arts, 19501 Redwood Rd., Castro Valley; Friday, Aug. 12, at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 13, at noon.

Why Go: Move over, High School Musical. Little Broadway’s very own Disney’s Cinderella takes the spotlight as up-and-coming stars aged 5 to 10 take the stage.  See what the performers have been rehearsing this summer.
Cost: $0-$12


Where/When: 7000 Coliseum Way, Suite 3, Oakland; Aug. 13 at 10:30 a.m.
Why Go: Help raise money by teaming up with the American Cancer Society Relay for Life by spending the day with the Oakland A’s’. By purchasing a sponsor package, you can choose which Relay for Life communities to support. Play ball!
Cost: $10+, $26+


Where/When: Castro Valley Library, 3600 Norbridge Ave., Castro Valley; Saturday, Aug. 13, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Why Go: Want to have your own jewelry that no one else has? Join the talented Chelsee Robinson, in this 90-minute program with various tools and beads and let your creativity take over. Teens are highly encouraged and space is limited. Registration is required.
Cost: Free


Where/When: Dunsmuir-Hellman Historical Estate, 2960 Peralta Oaks Ct., Oakland; Sunday, Aug. 14, at 3 p.m. (gates open at 2 p.m.)
Why Go: Listen to the sweet tunes of Grammy Award winning blues artist, Keb’ Mo’, along with Lavay Smith and the Russel City Blues Band. This concert will benefit the Oakland youth community through supporting their education.
Cost: $40 or free admission with donation of school supplies or cash when you register at www.dunsmuir-hellman.com or call 925-866-9559.


Where/When: Alameda County Fairgrounds, 4501 Pleasanton Ave., Pleasanton; Sunday, Aug. 14, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Why Go: Fly out to the Northern California Exotic Bird Expo one day event, where you will find adorable birds of all sizes, supplies, and accessories to complement your pet.
Cost: $7 (kids 10 and under free); parking $8

Another problem: When notified of a reply to a comment I could click the link in the email to go toRead More the article. That was not possible this time. So because a small minority zooms there computer the layout should be as it is? I don't think so. All that white space means that an article that could be read with just one or two clicks to scroll through is now going to take more scrolling to view. One thing that seems to be missing in today's world are web designers who (1) change the layout just because and (2) web designers who have neglected to consider the audience. The more I look at this layout the less I like it. The font needs to be darker than it is. the blue (like in "announcements") needs to be bolder. Overall, on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 best), I rank the new "improved" design a 3.
