In honor of our nation's birthday, we take a look back at stories we've covered that touch on the theme of being (or becoming) an American.

On the 4th of July, we celebrate our history, honor our men and women in uniform and reflect on the promises at the heart of the American project—chief among them, freedom, equality and self-determination.

Few American institutions say more about those values and the others we hold dear than the institutions of immigration and citizenship. So what better time than our nation's birthday to reflect on them?

That's what HBO had in mind when it decided to debut Alexandra Pelosi's Citizen USA: A 50 State Road Trip on Monday night.
