Castro Valley Prom Memories

Think white trash Cinderella, the boy version. It's probably good that we didn't have female dates because I don't know if they would have fit in the car with all of our ego.

Prom is a right of passage for most kids: the dinner, the, tux, the dress, the sexual frustration. As an adult it sounds like a nightmare.

My prom experiences were atypical. I used the money given by my grandparents for Junior Prom and rather than  an evening in Paris or whatever the prom theme was, I spent that evening getting my first tattoo. I must have done something right though, because my “prom” date that evening is my wife today.

My senior prom, I went with a dude, my best friend at the time. We both had dates, but for whatever reason, those fell through. So we decided to go on our own. We went out, got tuxes fit for a pimp, and we showed up for prom in the back of a pickup truck, blaring music, sitting on lawn chairs. Think white trash Cinderella, the boy version.  It’s probably good that we didn’t have female dates because I don’t know if they would have fit in the car with all of our ego.

My most vivid memory of that Senior Ball, was being in a throng of at least ten of my best male friends screaming an out of tune rendition of Whitney Houston’s "I Will Always Love You." It was loud, it was obnoxious, the couples around us were upset, but those are the memories that make high school worthwhile.

One of the questions that was asked this week on CVLegends was: Do you still remember the theme or song of your prom? What was it, where was it? Below you will find a limited selection of some of the responses.

“Class of 1967 at Canyon. Went with Neil Joergensen (from CVHS) and I believe the theme was Camelot. But that was soooooooo long ago. After the prom, we went on an all night cruise of the bay. What better way to keep everyone from drinking and driving?! But we were all dead and cold and looking pretty bedraggled by dawn! And I think I had one false eyelash down on my chin by then!! You have to laugh after 44 years!” - Cecily Sherman LeFevre

“That was over 40 years ago, I can barely remember the event. I did bring CVHS senior Jonnie Neaville to the Canyon Ball. She was gorgeous. We drove my Dad's '65 Yellow Impala SS. I don't remember the theme song though.”- Rino Sclippa

“Class of 1991 FOREVER YOUNG, I know it was in SF. cant think of the name of the place off hand. Our Jr prom was at the San Ramon country club and I think it was Make It Last forever.” - Jessika Adams

“1983 CVHS Senior Ball theme "Steppin' Out" by Elvis Costello, chosen by Regina Rogers, if I remember correctly. I believe it was held at the Fairmont Hotel in SF, and my mom still has the cake plate that Mr. Cotcher and Mrs. Brede let me "borrow" to bring my cake home.” - Julie Farrington-Sheetz

“Unchained Melody and I think it was at The Berkeley Marina.” - Amy Andrade-Cameron
