Burrito Wars

Where can you get the best burrito in Castro Valley?

A burrito is a thing of beauty.

Nominally the burrito is Mexican Food, but true aficionados know that the burrito was perfected here in the Bay Area. (Need more proof? Check out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_burrito)

I don’t know if you’ve suffered the scrawny attempts at burritos in other parts of the country, but they are weak plagiarisms compared to what we have.

This week I asked a very important question on CVLegends: where can you get the best burrito in Castro Valley?

The responses were heated. The responses were passionate. The responses were delicious.

Below you will find a small sampling:

Jennifer Darcy: College Avenue Burrito!! Also love me some Chipotle!!

Cara Graham Montoya: I haven't had a burrito in CV in a loooong time. However, I have very fond memories of the Burrito Shop’s burritos! They get my vote!

Derek Fieldsoe: Chicken Famoso Burrito from Molcajetes. It's the main reason why I come back to the mainland to eat Mexican.

Mike Davie: The burrito shop is OK, but compared the burritos in the rest of the bay quite mediocre. CV kinda strikes out on the burrito front. I was going to Los Pericos in SL for my burrito runs.

Joey Paiz: Crud... I was thinking El Portales, but typed Los Molcajetes... They're not bad, but Portales es muy fantastico!

Suzy Stidham: HANDS DOWN: El Rancho Supermercado. Best kept secret in CV.

Claire Pendleton: Portales is the best in Castro Valley, and my opinion is based upon the flavors in their burritos and salsas.

Cheryl Nunes Vance: There are no really good burritos in CV :-( I have been disappointed by Burrito Shop over and over and El Burrito Loco is just OK, but overpriced (last time I looked). I am afraid to try Portales because the places in that spot that came before them were horrible. Guilt by association, I guess. We tend to go to Los Perricos in Dublin, if we don't go all the way to Oakland, Alameda or SF to get our fix :-)Casey Sims: I gotta agree with the people who have said there are really no awesome burritos in CV. I'll go to Burrito Loco if I have to, but thats about it. Its worth the drive into hayward to hit up La Imperial, for sure.

Claire Pendleton: Well, I didn't want to bring up crossing the border, but since others already have, I must tell you: The absolute BEST Mexican food in the East Bay is Los Dos Hermanos on Mission near Tennyson in Hayward. My daughter swears by their burritos, but I have a hard time getting past their wonderful enchiladas (incredible red sauce!) and sopes. Go there, you won't be sorry.

Renee Jones Barks: It’s been 24 years since I've lived in the Bay Area, but when I come to visit La Imperial is ALWAYS on my agenda. I have to admit that you guys have named several I never knew existed and will have to try them in December.

John Rauch: I left the Valley in '69 and never, ever, knew what a burrito was until, I think it was Del Taco or Taco Bell, opened on the Blvd ('68/'69).

If you would like to see the complete response, including some of the more strident opinions, you can read them at www.facebook.com/CVLegends. As always, you are encouraged to leave your own super important burrito opinions or feel free to leave them here on Patch, in the comments section below.

Enjoy your burrito.
