Redwood High School’s Waste Audit

Congratulations to Redwood High School for completing Redwood’s first waste audit! Organized by high school counselor, Ninah Asuncion, the audit was conducted as part of CVSan’s Green Ribbon Schools Program. The waste audit helped identify how well Redwood students and staff are recycling and composting, and highlighted which areas could be improved upon.

The waste audit was held after school on Wednesday, February 5, 2014. Three students volunteered their time to sort through one day’s worth of garbage - 28.5 gallons!

The results of the waste audit showed that 33% of the materials sorted in the waste audit was actual garbage. Recyclable materials made up 50% of materials sorted and the remaining 17% was compostable material. Considering that Redwood’s food scrap recycling (organics) program began nine months ago, the waste audit results show that students and staff are doing a great job sorting their organics materials! Ongoing improvements to the organics and recycling programs at Redwood will surely further waste reduction for the school.

Great job Redwood High School for committing to see what’s in the garbage and continuing to reduce waste at school!  A special thank you goes to Ninah Asuncion, Dan Poulos, and the three students for a successful waste audit!
