CVSan is on the Path to Zero Waste; Come Along!

Castro Valley Sanitary District (CVSan) has long practiced and promoted the 4Rs (Reduce – Reuse – Recycle – Rot) to reduce waste and conserve resources.  CVSan’s Solid Waste Department has developed innovative and award-winning programs to reduce waste and disposal, increase diversion, and educate our community.  As we continue to practice the 4Rs, a higher goal of Zero Waste is ahead.  CVSan is developing the Path to Zero Waste, and invites our community to come along and participate.

What can you do to participate?  CVSan will be hosting the following free community workshops.  All members of the community are welcome and encouraged to attend.  Workshops will be held at CVSan offices, 21040 Marshall Street, Castro Valley, CA 94546.

Who are CVSan and our community working with?  On August 30, 2013, CVSan sent out a Request for Proposals for consultant services to assist staff in creating a CVSan Zero Waste Strategic Plan.  On November 5, 2013, the CVSan Board of Directors selected the HDR Team (HDR Engineering Inc., Zero Waste Associates, and Micro Services Plus).  The HDR Team has experience developing Zero Waste plans for other cities and towns such as: Alameda, Burbank, Los Angeles, Oceanside, Palo Alto, San Francisco, San Jose, and more.

What is Zero Waste?  To quote the Zero Waste International Alliance, a non-profit organization: “Zero Waste is a goal that is ethical, economical, efficient and visionary, to guide people in changing their lifestyles and practices to emulate sustainable natural cycles, where all discarded materials are designed to become resources for others to use.  Zero Waste means designing and managing products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources, and not burn or bury them.  Implementing Zero Waste will eliminate all discharges to land, water or air that are a threat to planetary, human, animal or plant health.”
