Will the Affable Underdogs Win? Not Without You

$15,000 raised by community to be donated to school district at board meeting tomorrow night. Another fundraiser with celebrity waiters set for Friday at Don Jose's Mexican Restaurant.

In a 1939 classic starring the iconic Jimmy Stewart, a naïve man is appointed to fill a vacancy in the U.S. Senate. He’s an affable underdog who doesn’t back down.

John Barbieri, Mike Bush, George Granger and Maggie MacIsaac aren’t naïve, but as in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, they aren’t backing down.

They’re school board trustees and staff, and they’ve had to go to Sacramento, so to speak, to meet with State Senator Ellen Corbett and staff to find ways to plug the hole in Castro Valley Unified School District’s ship.

Throwing them a life ring is Save Our Schools Castro Valley, which will present a $15,000 check to the school district at tomorrow’s school board meeting.

You can pitch in, too, while enjoying delicious Mexican food this Friday night at Mexican Restaurant this

The fundraiser features celebrity waiters, including school board members, district staff and parent leaders, who will assist regular staff by escorting you to your tables, refilling drinks and fetching your chips and salsa while encouraging patrons to leave a special “.”

School funding isn’t something we can take for granted any more, right? Unfortunately, we all need to actively pitch in.
