Vanderbuilt Construction Going Out of Business

After 22 years, a bad economy and other factors have forced a Castro Valley company to close.

After 22 years, a Castro Valley construction company is closing its doors.

A sign on the door of Vanderbuilt Construction Inc. at Center Street and Heyer Avenue says, "Vanderbuilt office will be closed week of May 31st - June 3rd."

Owner Mike Boshard answered a knock on the door and confirmed the closure but gave no detail, saying the company would issue a statement.

Meanwhile, another Castro Valley construction company with a similar name—Vanderbilt Family Builders—is not closing, and asked the Castro Valley/Eden Area Chamber of Commerce to distribute a memo distinguishing it:

Please note that there are two Vanderbilt/Vanderbuilt construction companies in Castro Valley.

The original family business, Vanderbilt Family Builders (license #637460), has been in business in Castro Valley since 1947 and is still in business maintaining a high quality of work and service it has built its reputation on for more than 60 years.

Please forward this on to everyone you know who may not know the difference.

Thank you,

Randy Vanderbilt

On Tuesday, ABC-7 news reported "unconfirmed reports that Vanderbuilt has had problems paying its subcontractors." The online article said Vanderbuilt had completed six of 11 homes destroyed in the San Brune PG&E pipeline explosion.

The San Mateo County Times on Wednesday reported that one of the San Bruno families received an email from Vanderbuilt on Friday. The Times said: "The message informed them the company was shutting down its operations until June 6 and, during the closure, its leadership would be evaluating whether to shutter the business for good."

Patch will update this story after Vanderbuilt releases its statement.
