OSH To Shut San Lorenzo, Remodel San Leandro Store

As Patch reported in July, the Lewelling store will be shut. The company says its San Leandro store will be remodeled. Will San Lorenzo shoppers switch or fight?

Orchard Supply Hardware has confirmed that it will remodel its San Leandro store even as it closes its San Lorenzo operation.

In July, when Patch wrote about the likely closure of the OSH on Lewelling Boulevard, dozens of residents posted comments ranging from angry to sad.

"If they close our OSH on Lewelling, we should NEVER shop at the Floresta store," wrote long-time San Lorenzo resident Keith Barros.

Others blamed the lengthy streetscape project on Lewelling for fouling up access to stores and complicating the survival of merchants on the strip.

Confirmation of San Lorenzo's loss and San Leandro's gain came in a Mercury News story that said both changes would occur in the first half of 2013.

OSH, which lost $26.7 million in its most recent financial period, must have decided that it couldn't support two stores just 3.1 miles apart.

What do you think about the closure. Will you remain an OSH shopper or find another outlet? Which?

I'm mailing them a letter tomorrow morning asking them to reconsider. Does our community really need another vacant business? A letter isn't much, but it's better than nothing. Anybody else with me?

What other business could fill that space? It's a lot of square footage. What other retail would San Lorenzo residents like that they don't now have?

i seen a commercial the other day about the *new osh* stores they are opening on cottle and silver creek in san jose. their website says something like brand new osh, same old roots. after seeing that i knew they were planning on closing san lorenzo osh no matter what. thats what the remodel in san leandro is for. san leandro is bigger and has a bigger parking lot. and overall osh has had weak sales. its nothing about that particular store. nothing we did wrong and nothing we do is gonna stop closing san lorenzo.

Greetings- I have not seen the commercials Rob Raistlin is referring to. If that is true, then it is unfortunate. The lease rate of that store is what will decide what other business will go in there. There are several other hardware stores I think could benefit from the big store and seperate parking. I am sure there are non hardware stores which could also benefit from this location, but it will depend if they can generate enough business to pay for the lease and still make money.

The San Leandro store seems smaller than the San Lorenzo.

Pete's Hardware has always been the right store. Support Pete's.

Why all the evasiveness and secrecy from OSH about the reasons for closing? They have something to hide or a card up their sleeve that they don't want to play yet. Corporate decisions are not easy to reverse, but it can be done if there are enough indicators to make it the right business decision. If OSH wants to liquidate the property and take the cash, so be it. But why can't OSH just make a deal for a renewable, short-term, reduced lease from the new property owner who may be hard-pressed to find a new tenant? Who IS the new property owner, anyway? Keep the San Lorenzo store open while remodeling the San Leandro store and maybe the San Lorenzo store can resurect itself, especially if we refuse to ever shop at the San Leandro OSH. Maybe we should picket the San Leandro store or the headquarters in San Jose. Keep SLZ OSH Open!

Made some purchases this morning there as well. Pete's is a great store, and fortunately does not appear to be hurting for business.

Sorry you are VERY wrong. The Floresta OSH is about 1/3 smaller than the Lewelling store. San Lorenzo has a parking lot that is exclusively theirs. They don't have to share with any other businesses. San Leandro's Parking lot belongs to KMart (ex that smallish patch right in front of the store. Also, San Lorenzo's Pickup Station is one of the biggest in the chain, and San Leandro's the smallest and most pathetic. The Nursery is also much bigger in the San Lorenzo store. San Lorenzo was remodeled the old Angels Home Improvement Chain. San Leandro was Oly's Hardware before OSH bought the chain. I know all of this because I worked at the San Lorenzo store for 5 years or so in the late 80's. They are really being stupid if they actually close the San Lorenzo store. It's always done better sales. I guess the Lewelling Blvd Widening probably dropped sales, but they should be up and running and better than ever.
