San Lorenzo Teen Makes Top 32 on 'The X Factor'

student and San Lorenzo resident Ellona Santiago will be competing on The X Factor this Thursday with her newly formed vocal group as part of 32 final acts in the singing competition.

The 14-year-old was selected from thousands who auditioned nationwide for a chance to .

"First thing I would do is actually buy our dream house," Santiago said in her bootcamp video. "I want to secure my family."

Last week during "boot camp," the 150 selected contestants were narrowed down to 32 acts after singing in group performances — eight boys, eight girls, eight groups and eight contestants over 30 years old.

Santiago sang Whitney Houston's “I Have Nothing” with her group and then faced the judges. [See the performance in the video above.]

At first she, along with several other solo acts, didn't make the cut. However, judge Simon Cowell called these contestants back on stage and grouped them together, giving them a second chance to compete as groups.

To date, a vocal group has yet to win The X Factor.

This week's shows will focus on "the judges' houses." Contestants will be sent to stay there and will be mentored to compete for one of 16 spots in the next round — the live shows.
