The San Leandro Library is presenting the life of John L. Waller in a film documentary titled John L. Waller: Striving for Equality.
John L. Waller became politically active and rose through the ranks to become a prominent member of the Kansas Republican Party. During this time, he actively campaigned on civil rights and social justice for blacks. Although spurned in his attempts to seek elected office, he was the only African-American elector in the 1888 U.S. Presidential Election. In 1891, he was then appointed U.S. Consul to Madagascar by President Benjamin Harrison.
David Talley, the film's researcher and former television executive, will introduce the film.
