Day of the Dead, in Spanish known as Dia de los Muertos, is celebrated as a national holiday throughout Mexico and commemorated in many other places around the globe. It is thought to have originated hundreds of years ago as an Aztec festival.

On the holiday, loved ones typically gather to remember and pray for family and friends who have died and visit their graves. Some make private altars for the dead using marigolds, skulls and sugar as well as the deceased's once favorite foods.
