Weekend Planner: Zucchinis Galore, 5K/10K, Wine Tasting Train, Help a Local School and See GLEE

Enjoy a zucchini-filled weekend, get a workout while running along the Bay, pair wines with cheese on a historic train, lend a helping hand at a local elementary school, and take the kids to a free GLEE concert.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the weekend. Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time. Check our picks for the activities to hit this weekend.

Volunteer Day
Where/When: , San Lorenzo; Saturday, Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Why Go: Lend a helping hand to teachers and staff by assisting them with setting up the classrooms, playground and garden before the first day of school. "San Lorenzo is our community and we need anyone who's willing to help," Principal Vanessa Bramlett said. "Retirees, business owners, neighbors—you don't need to have a child who's attending Grant Elementary to come help out."
Cost: Free


Where/When: 19501 Hesperian Blvd. (Kennedy Park), Hayward; Saturday, Aug. 20, and Sunday, Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Why Go: Zucchini ice cream has never tasted better. The annual zucchini festival is back packed with live music, rides for children, arts and crafts, and of course plenty of food tastings.
Cost: General admission $6; children, seniors, and disabled $3; children under 5 free. Saturday only: Receive $1 off per ticket when you donate one can of non-perishable food to the Hayward Salvation Army.


Where/When: 4901 Breakwater Ave., Hayward; Saturday, Aug. 20. Day-of registration begins at 7:30 a.m. 5K race starts at 8:30 a.m. 10K race states at 8:40 a.m.
Why Go: Spend your morning running or walking the Bay Trail as it leads you to spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay-Estuary in a 5K or 10K race. By participating, your contributions will support the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center.
Cost: Pre-registration fee: $30 by Thursday, Aug. 18 at noon. Day-of registration fee: $35

Where/When: 37029 Mission Blvd., Fremont; Saturday, Aug. 20, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Why Go: Indulge yourself with wine and cheese pairings while wine educator Steve Ferree talks about the history of the beverages you try; all while train riding down the Niles Canyon Railway. Must be ages 21 and up.
Cost: $37.50 per ticket

Where/When: Alameda South Shore Center, 523 South Shore Center West, Alameda; Saturday, Aug. 20, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Why Go: Hear your most beloved songs all over again by Bay Area Girls, a GLEE coverband. Dress up as your favorite GLEE character and sing along.
Cost: Free
