CV Weekend Planner: Zucchinis, 5K/10K, Book Sale, Buzz Lightyear, Bark for Fundraising

Taste zucchini in your lunch and dessert, say good morning to the bay, find discounted treasures at the library, watch the journey of toys, and bark for a cause.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the weekend. Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time. Check our picks for the activities to hit this weekend.


Where/When: 19501 Hesperian Blvd. (Kennedy Park), Hayward; Saturday, Aug. 20, and Sunday, Aug. 21, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Why Go: Zucchini ice cream has never tasted better. The annual zucchini festival is back with jam packed with live music, rides for children, arts and crafts, and of course food tasting.
Cost: Saturday only: Receive $1 off per ticket when you donate one can of non-perishable food toward the Hayward Salvation Army.
General Admission: $6, children, seniors, and handicapped: $3, children under 5: Free


Where/When: 4901 Breakwater Ave., Hayward; Saturday, Aug. 20. Day-of registration begins at 7:30 a.m. 5K race starts at 8:30 a.m. 10K race states at 8:40 a.m.
Why Go: Spend your morning running or walking the Bay Trail as it leads you to spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay-Estuary in a 5K or 10K race. By participating, your contributions will support the Hayward Shoreline Interpretive Center.
Cost: Pre-registration fee: $30 by Thursday, Aug. 18 at noon. Day-of registration fee: $35


Where/When: 3600 Norbridge Ave., Castro Valley; Friday, Aug. 19, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Why Go: Don’t miss out on the Castro Valley Library book sale where you will find thousands of books, CDs and DVDs for great prices. All proceeds will go toward the library.
Cost: Free

Where/When: Dougherty Station Community Center, 17011 Bollinger Canyon Rd., San Ramon; Friday, Aug. 19, at 8 p.m.
Why Go: See what the buzz is about Pixar’s Oscar winning animated movie, Toy Story 3. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets to watch Woody and the gang go on an adventure that will leave you laughing to infinity and beyond.
Cost: Free


Where/When: 9990 Crow Canyon Rd. (Hosanna Boys Ranch), Castro Valley; Saturday, Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Why Go: Walk your four-legged furry friends to help the fight against cancer through helping Castro Valley's Relay for Life team, Bosom Buddies raise funds. Along with walking with your best friend, there will be an agility demonstration, contests, vendors, and many surprises for the both of you.
Cost: $25 for first dog, $10 for each additional
