Abortion: For it or Against it?

The Great Castro Valley Debate has been known for hosting civilized discussions on topics that matter most to them. Their next debate will be on the issue of abortion.

Standing as one of America’s most controversial topics, abortion has long divided folks along social, cultural, religious, and political lines. It cuts deep into how we value and evaluate human life, protected rights, ethics and more.

Given its contentiousness, abortion is an issue that has yet to be settled, despite the Supreme Court’s historic landmark ruling in Roe v. Wade in 1973. Recently, Senator Wendy Davis (D – Ft. Worth) of Texas successfully gave a 13-hour filibuster to block pro-Life legislation from a vote. All the while, pro-Choice and pro-Life activists rallied right outside, often butting heads with one another and chanting incendiary slogans. This issue was so important that the Texas Senate convened a new 30-day special session to hash out a comprehensive abortion bill, culminating in its passage.

Clearly, many of us are still grappling with the tough questions abortion entails and how the answers affect us personally and societally.

There is no doubt that local Castro Valley residents have an opinion on this topic as well. The Great Castro Valley Debate (GCVD), the same organization that assembled the well-attended incorporation debate last November, will be hosting a debate on abortion featuring some prominent local community leaders. Unlike the environment outside Texas’s legislative halls, GCVD will maintain a respectful environment for Castro Valley residents to hear both sides without fear of intimidation or discomfort.
