Pioneer Cemetery Fundraiser: A BBQ 'to Die for'

A BBQ fundraiser for the historic San Lorenzo Pioneer Cemetery will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Catch some delicious BBQ while preserving and protecting a piece of San Lorenzo history.

Join the Hayward Area Historical Society and the San Lorenzo Pioneer Cemetery Friends Group for a fundraiser barbecue for the San Lorenzo Pioneer Cemetery Saturday, Sept. 17, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Tickets include the barbecue at the Meek Park picnic grounds, 17365 Boston Rd., Hayward, a raffle and live music by Threefires, a medieval- and Celtic-inspired "Antiqui-Folk" repertoire.

A guided tour of the cemetery at 1:45 p.m. will follow the barbecue.

The cost is $25 per person; ages 12 and under are free. To purchase tickets, call 510-581-0223. Tickets will also be available at the door.

All proceeds support the San Lorenzo Pioneer Cemetery.

The San Lorenzo Pioneer Cemetery is located on the corner of Hesperian Boulevard and College Street in San Lorenzo. The cemetery recorded its first burial in 1854, and holds 2,561 graves, including those of local historical figures William Meek and John Lewelling. The San Lorenzo Pioneer Cemetery Friends Group's goal is to raise money to restore and protect this historic site.
