5 Things: Quit Smoking, Recycle and Tour Casa Peralta

Quit smoking, recycle old electronics and catch a musical performance by a member of the San Francisco Opera Chorus this weekend.

1) Was your New Year’s resolution to quit smoking? Eden Medical Center, located at 20103 Lake Chabot Rd., is offering a class aimed at helping Castro Valley residents stop smoking for good. The class boasts a new approach to quitting smoking and focuses on learning about nicotine, identifying and changing behaviors that encourage smoking, developing strategies to help you cope with cravings and learning alternative stress reducing techniques. The cost of the one-day class, held on Saturday, Jan. 22 from 10 AM to 1 PM, is $25 per person.

2) The Boy Scouts of troop 708 are holding an to collect peoples’ old and unwanted electronics to include televisions, cell phones, computer monitors, etc. on Saturday, Jan. 22. Items being collected include just about anything with a screen. The fundraiser will be held at , located at 2490 Grove Way in Castro Valley, from 9 AM to 4 PM. Print out a copy of the flier from Patch.com and drop off four items for the price of three. Some items require a recycling fee.

3) Take advantage of the warm weather we’ve been having and head over to Hayward City Hall Plaza, located at 777 B St., to attend the weekly Hayward Farmer's Market this Saturday, Jan. 22. Over 35 farmers show off their locally grown fruits and vegetables every Saturday, year round. Baked goods and other foods are available as well.

4) Take a tour of Casa Peralta, the City of San Leandro's historic house museum, this weekend. Casa Peralta, located at 384 W. Estudillo Ave., is scheduled to be open to the public weekly on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 AM to 3 PM and this weekend is no exception. Tours of the house and grounds are free during these times, but it is advisable to call ahead and confirm operating hours for the day or to announce a large group.

5) The Eden United Church of Christ, located at 21455 Birch St. in Hayward, is hosting a member of the San Francisco Opera Chorus this Sunday, Jan. 23. Lee Steward, a tenor with the San Francisco Opera Chorus, will be performing alongside local pianist Loris Coburn. Tickets cost $15 a piece for adults and $10 for students. The concert will start at 3 PM.
