POSITION VACANCY: YOSAC ORCHESTRA CONDUCTOR

The Youth Orchestra of Southern Alameda County (YOSAC) is seeking a Music Director for our upcoming 2014-2015 season....

About YOSAC:
Established in 1985, YOSAC is a 501(c)3 non-profit youth orchestra. Its purpose is to augment instrumental music programs in public and private schools throughout the greater Southern Alameda County area.

The season consists of 30 rehearsals for each of the two student music groups, and a series of three concerts.

The two ensembles within the YOSAC program are the Symphony Orchestra and the String Ensemble. Symphony Orchestra is an advanced full orchestra for strings, winds, brass and percussion. Students are typically in 8th -12th grade. Rehearsals are from 7:15 – 9:15 pm on Tuesday nights. String Ensemble is an orchestra for string students only, who generally have 2 to 4 years of experience. Participation is by audition. Rehearsals are from 6:10 – 7 pm on Tuesday nights. Both groups meet at Bret Harte Junior High School in Hayward.

Education/Experience Requirements
Music Degree (BA or BM) with experience leading, teaching and conducting full and string orchestras; advanced degree preferred
Experience in string pedagogy required

Other qualifications:
An excitement for and appreciation of making music with young musicians
Strong communication skills; ability to inspire and communicate musically and verbally with students and the audience
Interested in a long-term relationship with YOSAC
Exceptional musicianship and conducting skills
Command of a broad range of orchestral repertoire (including educational repertoire for young musicians)
Ability to create programs that will both challenge musicians and attract audiences
Experience working with young musicians essential
Dynamic personality, strong interpersonal, leadership, teaching and communication skills
Willingness to work with the board to build the program and recruit new members

Compensation:
Salary to be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Bonus incentives will be considered. This is an independent contractor position, not eligible for benefits. No federal or state taxes or FICA are deducted; payment of taxes is the contractor’s responsibility. Contractual terms are from August 1 to May 31, to include one or two days of auditions, which may in some years be at the beginning of June.
