Annual Education Summit Prepares First Generation Students to Navigate the Higher Education Process

Financial aid workshops and college resource fair connect students with resources for higher education

Alameda County students are invited to attend the 13th Annual Education Summit on February 23, 2013 to learn about the college application process and financial aid opportunities. The Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE), in collaboration with Cal State East Bay, will host the summit from 8:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Cal State East Bay Gymnasium in Hayward, Calif. The Summit will include education and college-related workshops, representatives from 45 colleges and universities, and financial aid resources.

As the higher education opportunities become more competitive and tuition continues to increase, the Education Summit organizers understand that college may feel costly and out of reach, especially for underrepresented students such as English learners and first generation college-bound students. According to the California Department of Education, 29.4 percent of African American students, 34.8 percent of Hispanic or Latino students and 28.8 percent of American Indian students who graduated high school were eligible to enter the state’s higher education system in 2011. The Education Summit organizers hope to improve the number of minority students eligible for college, and inspire the eligible students to pursue higher education, by providing valuable information and resources to assist with the most common barriers like navigating the application process and securing financial assistance.

“For many high school students the college application process is complicated and overwhelming. The Education Summit is one of the resources we provide to help students understand the value of higher education and connect them with the tools to help them get there and to graduate,” said Karen Monroe, Alameda County Associate Superintendent of Education. “A college degree is still the best investment an individual can make.”

Another problem: When notified of a reply to a comment I could click the link in the email to go toRead More the article. That was not possible this time. So because a small minority zooms there computer the layout should be as it is? I don't think so. All that white space means that an article that could be read with just one or two clicks to scroll through is now going to take more scrolling to view. One thing that seems to be missing in today's world are web designers who (1) change the layout just because and (2) web designers who have neglected to consider the audience. The more I look at this layout the less I like it. The font needs to be darker than it is. the blue (like in "announcements") needs to be bolder. Overall, on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 best), I rank the new "improved" design a 3.
