Fascinating read about a Ca. Beekeeper - 'The Beekeeper's Lament: How One Man and Half a BillionRead More Honey Bees Help Feed America' Check it out at the library.

I was glad to hear that San Lorenzo now has a farmer's market. Thanks also for doing a great jobRead More promoting the benefits of organic (both for our own health and for bees). One thing to mention, native bees are also at risk when pesticides are used. On the good side, even though I haven't had any beehives survive over the past couple of years, I have never seen so many bumblebees as I have this spring. My Boysenberries and blackberries are doing pretty well.

This is a good idea. However, the headline writer needs to check the facts. There is no such thingRead More as a "Castro Valley Staples." The nearest one is the next county over in San Ramon.

Voting for CISPA is a one way ticket out of politics.

You clicked and read the article (as did Craig below), thus confirming that people from San LeandroRead More do care :) As Colbert reminded us a couple of years ago when he interviewed John Garamendi (hillarious clip, see it at http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/388964/june-08-2011/better-know-a-district---california-s-10th---john-garamendi), a member of congress does not actually have to live in the district they represent. That said, I think Ellen has officially moved to Hayward. CD 15 is definitely more conservative than Stark's old district, but it's still fairly liberal, which is why Swalwell has been playing it progressive until now. Trouble is that this is a bill that only big corporations like. It doesn't really give Swalwell much in the way of points with conservatives, but it does make it clear to progressives he's not the real deal.
Craig Williams April 20, 2013 at 04:03 pm
Not to be too self serving but Corbett unlike Stark needs a good ground game. She almost has tooRead More many good issues that she's worked on over the years, a long history and a strong history on education, jobs, the environment , health care etc. If the people in his district know about her herstory , it should be a hell of a race.

I would love to see the farmers market people leave and go to the Bayfair or Hayward market. I sellRead More at the Cop shop every year and we did so much better on sat. I think they could make much more money if they had a flea market/ craft sale maybe twice a month or even every week. I know the lot would be filled and they would make so more money. Maybe even have a few food trucks like the Castro Valley farmers market did . Just a thought but if they stay I say bring on the artisans.
sandra dawson May 19, 2013 at 01:29 pm
I was not impressed with the opening of San Lorenzo's farmers market. There were so few booths;Read More some selling the same thing. I would like to see artisans there. It would peak my interest.

Norm. You can easily get a 30 day extension on line. Google "pay your ticket alameda countyRead More superior court." If you want a chance to avoid paying $500 - perhaps a trial by written declaration would work. Or obtain an attorney. Many options depending on the factors surrounding your ticket. Having been a recent recipient of a red light violation I was wondering if there is any info on howRead More many people never receive the original citation in the mail? I never received the original, I received the delinquency notice three weeks after the hearing date with only a couple days to decide what to do. In the end, I can't afford to fight it because it's cheaper to just pay the fine and take traffic school. Nice scam the city of Fremont has going on. Hope it shows the residents of Fremont the type of politicos you vote in.

Eric. Look at the contract your self if you like. Section b #7 and 8.2 As I read it there isRead More only a 10 day notice required with no termination penalty of any kind. Link to Fremont page. Just had a chance to read this story. Loved it! While I believe that conscientious students wouldRead More try their best at the test, as I did when I took state aptitude tests in school, I can hardly imagine staying up nights worrying about it! There is nothing at stake except perhaps personal satisfaction so the test itself shouldn't impose stress. A high-strung parent, on the other hand, might.
David April 27, 2013 at 03:09 pm
Oh come on, Rob. You talk about me cherry picking stuff? 10/10? Sure. And as I've shown you canRead More pull out Maxwell Park, North Oakland, parts of SF (Glen Park, for example), parts of El Cerrito and other locations to show that API scores aren't well-correlated with property values. Again, why do homes sell for the same $/sq foot in Maxwell Park as Estudillo Estates? San Lorenzo's API is about the same or better than most of SLUSD. Property values there are lower. The clearest example of what effect API scores have on property values was mentioned below, about a 10% difference depending on which side of the tracks, er, 580 you live on in Castro Valley. 10%? whoopdedo, that kind of variation is washed out when you factor in commute times, crime, amenities, etc. In fact, API scores are likely to continue to shrink as a factor in RE values as more and more parents flee the public schools, no matter what the API (witness SLUSD, the 30% drop in OUSD enrollment in just the past decade, etc). In another generation, we'll be accused by our children of child abuse by having sent them to public schools.
Rob Rich April 27, 2013 at 12:38 pm
If you accept the premise that API scores are poorly correlated with real estate vualues, then is itRead More coincidental that the top school districts are in areas with high real estate values? http://www.greatschools.org/find-a-school/7046-ten-california-school-districts-highest-test-scores-2012.gs. In the old days, 10 for 10 was considered pretty good correlation.

Another coat of paint won't help the Lorenzo Theatre, the existing paint actually isn't that bad andRead More the tiles on the ticket booth have been sadly painted over several times, and they certainly don't need another coat! The money that's there should be used to restore the neon on the tower and the marquee. That's what was done for the Fox Oakland, years before the rest of the restoration was completed and it showed what could be for that neglected jewel on Telegraph. Restore the neon and let it shine as a beacon of hope for the Lorenzo Theatre and for transforming the surrounding abandoned ruins that once was a vital commercial district.

It doesn't make a difference how many people show up, everything will eventually get caught up inRead More red tape and opposition from the bohanons, lack of funding, etc. Nothing ever gets done in San Lorenzo. That's why the empty store fronts and blight. It saddens me to say it because I live here but it's all a waste of time and energy.

Hi Paul - it is great to avoid goitrogenic foods (especially soy), but almonds aren't high on thatRead More list. Peanuts are, however. Here is a site with a good list of foods to keep to a minimum in your menu planning http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com/goitrogens/ Best of health to you! :-) Kia
Paul May 1, 2013 at 01:53 pm
I have thyroid nodules and I discovered soy and almonds are Goitrogenic foods. They can prevent theRead More body's absorption of iodine, which is essential for a healthy thyroid. I've been looking at rice milk, coconut milk and hemp milk, but I think I will just go back to organic cow milk.

Bryan, Do you realize that the people behind NOMBY are also the same people who forcefully stormedRead More other peoples Property in Oakland an elsewhere, essentially taking them over leading police to confront them? Alameda County Against Drones is a Spin off from Occupy Oakland, the same idiots whom go out of their way to ruin everyone else day. As far as I'm concerned, they may have some Legitimate points, but they can't be trusted. It's similar to trusting the guy who just carjacked you at gunpoint and promises to not kill you if you be his chauffeur. It would be in the best Interest of Occupy Oakland AND NOMBY if Alameda County Law Enforcement Agencies don't get Drones. Because if they did, those Drones would more than likely be used to keep tabs on Occupies every move. These individuals think it's wrong for our Police to have Drones, yet they have no problem calling the police "Pigs", Protesting, wrecking havoc on neighborhoods and trespassing on another persons Property all in the name of Free Speech. You gotta see the irony!

Thanks for the update Kari. I stand by my original post and adamantly oppose the shuttle plan.
Smita Kasargod April 25, 2013 at 12:56 pm
This park does not belong to you. All taxpayers should have access to the park even if they areRead More physically disabled. You want an exclusive club not a public park. A little van making 3 trips a week is not going to ruin the environment. Get off your high horse and put yourself in other less fortunate people's shoes. You all are whines that is all. If your are bothered by this plan, suggest a constructive alternative instead of dissing people who actually take the trouble to plan.
