Neighbors Gather and Grub at National Night Out

The annual event, celebrated at St. John's Catholic Church, drew hundreds from San Lorenzo, Cherryland and Ashland.

Hundreds of people came out to  Tuesday evening to take a stand against crime, grub on some great BBQ, and meet with their neighbors and local law enforcement.

Folks from San Lorenzo, Cherryland, Ashland and other parts of unincorporated Alameda County celebrated National Night Out, an event geared towards strengthening ties between neighborhoods and their local law enforcement and to take a stand against violence and crime in their communities.

The event was hosted by the Alameda County Sheriff's Office's Crime Prevention Unit, known as the COPP Shop, since the message behind the event is their core mission for the community.

"It gets people in the community to recognize us not only as cops, but as people in the community." Sgt. Bret Scheuller of the Alameda County Sheriff's Office said. "When they need something, it's easier for them to come to us."

In honor of the event, the Sheriff's Office brought out some of their heavy equipment. They also coordinated a barbecue dinner for all of those in attendance.

The San Lorenzo Village Homes Association was also well represented at the event. Members sported Burgundy shirts with the words "It takes a village" printed on the back.

"Any event that promotes community bonding and community awareness is beneficial" said Kathy Martins, interim administrator of the SLVHA.
