Castro Valley Man Who Threatened Family Shot by Sheriff's Deputy

Man, 50, had homemade mock gun, according to the Alameda County Sheriff's Department.

An Alameda County Sheriff's sergeant shot and injured a 50-year-old man Friday night after he told them he was going to shoot "everyone," including them, if they came to his house.

The man, who as of 9:30 p.m. Friday was in surgery at Eden Medical Center, had been "acting bizarre," according to frightened family members who called police for help around 7 p.m., according to sheriff's spokesman J.D. Nelson.

As deputies were on the way to the residence in the 3400 block of Lake Chabot Road, the man, who is on probation for a felony weapons violation, called police and made the shooting threats. Police haven't yet released his name.

The area near Seven Hills Road was blocked off around 7:15 p.m., and an armored vehicle was put into place. Nelson said the suspect came out of the house and ducked down behind some trees, popping up and down several times and holding something that appeared to be a gun.

A sheriff's sergeant then shot the suspect from a porthole on top of the armored vehicle, striking him in the chest. Deputies discovered that he had a device made of metal in the shape of a gun, with a wooden handle.

The residents who originally called for help had already safely left the home by the time the deputies first arrived there, Nelson said.
