Hayward firefighters are on the scene of a car fire next to Interstate Highway 880 this afternoon, a fire captain said.

The fire was first reported at about 3:15 p.m. near 411 W. A St. and an onramp to I-880, Capt. Thor Poulsen said.

A column of smoke could be seen from the highway rising into the still air, and motorists were slowing down to see what was causing the fire, complicating traffic in the area.

Firefighters have had difficulty putting the fire out, and pouring water on it has only made the fire larger, leading firefighters to believe there may have been magnesium in the car.

The fire also caused a fuel leak in the burning Mercedes Benz, and firefighters are also trying to prevent the fuel from flowing into nearby storm drains.

A second engine was called to the area at 3:32 p.m., and firefighters expected to have the blaze extinguished by 4 p.m., Poulsen said.
