The line at Sears had about 100 people an hour before the store's 3 a.m. opening.

Raul and Lyn Ayala were first in line at Sears. They had their sights set on a Zenith Television. The couple sat in line starting at 11 p.m.

Many major retailers at the Hayward mall opened their doors at midnight and 4 a.m. Folks lined up around stores like Sears, Kohl's, JCPenney and Macy's to purchase electronics, clothing and everything else inbetween.

However, one of the most popular items that many flocked to the mall for was the Air Jordan III Black Cement, a limited-edition sneaker re-released from 1988 and retailing at $150 a pair.

Shoppers stood in line outside the mall entrance as early as 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon to score the highly-valued shoes. They were carried by most shoe retailers like Footlocker and Champs, which started selling them at 3 a.m. Friday morning.

Janelle Hyman, manager at Champs, said the store had 50 pairs of the Jordans.

"As we were trying to go to break, we had a rush of people as they opened the mall doors from Kohl's," Hyman said.
